Ahoy, and paint away maties!

From September till January I sincerely tried to paint my dishware in an interesting way. I ended up trying to at least make it look like the dishware I knew and used. Ovals and perspective turned out to be the unwilling dog that wouldn’t translate from theory to practice. But the real enemy was the paint itself. It didn’t work for me or with me. It was actually trying to do the opposite of everything I wanted it to do. On purpose.

(But..ahum... in all honesty I have to mention that I didn’t practice enough. I wasn’t a real Spartan this painting season. But I passed. And I like my work.)

We all know that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. These are my children that I (like every parent with one eye closed) love and adore. Even there really is something strange happening there…

And then, when we were just getting familiar with this assignment, we got another one. We had to paint life models. Here are three, two studies from the class (we had two and a half hour to paint a real human) and one self-portrait. You guess which is what (or who).  

And that was probably the end of an illustrious painting career.

Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

Drie verhalen, met als toegift een novelle. 'Een goed huwelijk' is een van de verhalen in deze bundel:
Twee ogenschijnlijk doorsnee mensen – in een doorsnee woonplaats, met een doorsnee baan, u kent ze wel – hebben een lang en gelukkig huwelijk. Als haar man op zakenreis is, vindt de vrouw een doos met het donorcodicil, de bibliotheekpas en het rijbewijs van een andere vrouw. Een vrouw die nog niet zo lang geleden in het nieuws was. Een vrouw die is vermoord…

Als Darcy Anderson bij toeval ontdekt dat de man met wie ze 26 jaar gelukkig getrouwd is, al jarenlang een sadistische seriemoordenaar blijkt te zijn, staat haar wereld op zijn kop. Dat wordt erger als haar man alles lachend bekent en haar een voorstel doet dat ze niet kan weigeren waardoor het onmogelijk wordt om de politie in te schakelen. Een van de vier verhalen die alle (volgens het door de auteur geschreven nawoord) gebaseerd zijn op gewone gebeurtenissen, maar waar hij een horrorachtige scenario van gemaakt heeft dat de lezer op het puntje van zijn stoel houdt. Stapje voor stapje ontwikkelen de verhalen zich waar de lezer ingezogen worden met een knap opgebouwde spanning en een vaak onwaarschijnlijk en/of onverwacht plot. De karakters zijn herkenbaar (het zou over iedereen kunnen gaan), de opbouw door de dagelijkse ingredienten zeer herkenbaar (het zou ieders werkelijkheid kunnen zijn) en het taalgebruik modern. Interessante bundel van deze veelschrijver. Paperback met normale druk. Mac Steenaart
