Dat was lang geleden! Niet uit luiheid, hoor, het is de opleiding die me gegijzeld houdt. De tijd vliegt, de schoolopdrachten zijn groot, blinken uit in veelheid en zijn soms onbegrijpelijk. Daarover later meer. Nu een, voorlopig zeldzame, nieuwe illustratie van Nadia. Hoe vind je deez, dan?

In de introductieweek zijn we van start gegaan met een opdracht die niet veel uitleg behoeft (ook al zou ik het willen, waar te beginnen).

We kregen, mee naar huis, één nieuwe frisse ontstopper om ‘IETS’ mee te doen aan de hand van vorm, betekenis en/of eigen verhaal.

The introduction week started of with an assignment that needs no further explanation (even if I wanted, were to start).

We did get, one new fresh plunger, to take home and do ‘SOMETHING’ with it. Thinking of shape, meaning and/or your own story.

SCHOOLLIFE

Volgende week begin ik aan een langgewenste studie. Kijkend naar mijn nieuwe schoolspullen, vraag ik me af waar sommige dingen eigenlijk voor zijn en of ik dat boek van 3,5 kilo echt binnen 4 jaar uit krijg.

Mijn hart maakt een vreugdesprong als ik de potloden, pennen, stiften, kwasten, tekenmappen, papier, schriften, boeken, inkt, lijm, spalter (?), nieuwsbrieven en verfbussen zie en denk aan de buitenlandse excursieplannen, opdrachten, spannende tijden, beloftes, de enorme mediatheek en de exposities.

Ik heb een collegekaart. JOEPIE!


Next week I will start a long wished study. Looking at my new school supplies, I wonder, what is the use of some of these things and will I finish the 11 pound book within the four years.

My heart is jumping with joy when I look at the pencils, pens, markers, brushes, portfolios, paper, cashiers, books, ink, glue, spalter (?), newsletters en paint cans and when I think of the foreign excursions, assignments, exiting times, promises, the huge library and the expositions.

I have got a college pass. Whoopee!

NADIA

Voor een project (waarvan de ontwikkeling zich nog in het tweeduister afspeelt) heb ik een nieuwe openingspagina voor ‘Nadia en het fantastische haar’ gemaakt.

Dat leuke dorpje verderop is La Paz en die walvis komt daar heus voor. Zie ook de inventieve boodschappentas, ideetje van Esperanza.

Working at this project (which is developing in the twilight zone) I made a new first page for the story ‘Nadia and her fantastic hair’.

That nice little village you see is La Paz and that whale is really common there. And check out the inventive grocery bag, a little idea of Esperanza.

De gedaantes van Nadia

Hier is er eentje gebaseerd op de illustratiestijl van ‘best-seller illustrator’ Rebecca Dautremer. De helft van de outfit is van het personage Selma uit het boek Sentimento. Staat Nadia fantastisch! De schoenen zijn mijn oude (eh..vintage) Panama Jacks uit 1997.

Aan deze, winters geklede, Nadia kleeft natuurlijk een heel nieuw verhaal...

Here is one based on the illustration-style of ‘best-seller illustrator’ Rebecca Dautremer. Half the outfit is taken from the character Selma from the book Sentimento. Looks fantastic on Nadia! The shoes are my old (eh…vintage) Panama Jacks from 1997.

WORK

Natuurlijk wordt er ook nog gewerkt in opdracht en die opdrachten zijn vaak heel leuk. Zo leuk dat het bijna geen werk lijkt!

Dit is een geboortekaart voor een gezin dat midden op de prachtige Veluwe woont.

Off course there are always assignments to be done. And, practically always, they are fun to do. In fact they are so pleasing to work on that I can hardly call it work!

This is a birth card for a family who lives in the middle of the amazing Veluwe.

NADIA

Tijdens het bedenken van een nieuw verhaal over Nadia stel ik me voor hoe de omgeving waarin dit verhaal zich afspeelt er uit zal gaan zien. Wat is het thema van het verhaal en welke kleuren, kleren en dieren horen daarbij.

STAD
Hier zie je een beeld van één van de volgende Nadia verhalen. Dit verhaal speelt zich af in een grote stad. Nadia gaat daar logeren bij haar tante. Zij woont in een groot oud huis uit de Spaanse tijd, in een straat met wuivende palmen, bloemperken, bankjes en vogels.

Goudgekleurde huizen, ornamenten, kopjes thee, fluwelen gordijnen, terracotta, kant, een rode poes met groene ogen, palmen, bloemen, zilver, hout, boeken, wonderlijke schilderijen, steen, strikken en kniekousen, chic eten, rood, okergeel en oranje in zachte structuren, de straatmuzikanten en de duiven die weten wat er in de kelder rommelt…

While making up a new story about Nadia I start to imagine the surroundings for the story. What is the theme, which colours, cloth and animals belong with it.

CITY
Here is an image for one of the upcoming Nadia stories. It takes place in a big city. Nadia is going to spend time with her aunt that lives there. She lives in a big old mansion from the Spanish era, in a street with waving palm trees, flowerbeds, benches and birds.

Gold coloured houses, ornaments, cups of tea, velvet curtains, terracotta, lace, a red pussycat with green eyes, palm trees, flowers, silver, wood, books, marvelous paintings, stone, bows and knee-stockings, fancy diner, red, ochre and orange in soft structures, the street musicians and the pigeons who know what is making that noise in the basement…

GESTRAND
Theo: Door een defecte trein strandde ik vorige week in Delft. Ineens stond er een meisje op een lichtblauwe Vespa voor me. Ze kwam me wel vaag bekend voor, maar ik kon haar gezicht niet plaatsen. Toen ze zei dat ik wel met haar mee kon rijden, dacht ik: “Is dat zo?”. Blijkbaar woont ze in dezelfde buurt en heeft mij wel eens gespot. Ik heb erg genoten van het ritje naar huis en ik hoop dat jij de volgende keer bij mij achterop wilt!

STRANDED
Theo: Last week I ended up in Delft, because my train did break down. All of a sudden there was this girl on a blue Vespa. She looked somewhat familiar, but I couldn’t place her face. She said she could give me a lift home and I thought: “Is that so?”. Apparently she lives in my neighborhood and spotted me now and again. I really enjoyed the ride home en I hope next time you will take a ride on my backseat!

NADIA

Tijdens het bedenken van een nieuw verhaal over Nadia stel ik me voor hoe de omgeving waarin dit verhaal zich afspeelt er uit zal gaan zien. Wat is het thema van het verhaal en welke kleuren, kleren en dieren horen daarbij.

DORP
Hier zie je een beeld van één van de volgende Nadia verhalen. Dit verhaal speelt zich af in een klein dorp dichtbij La Paz. Een dorp omringt door palmbomen, vol zanderige wegen, dieren en mensen op straat (op de zanderige weg, dus).

Warm, zon, gezellig, limonade drinken, groen, hout, palmen, de was die droogt, aardetinten, zand, ijsjes, lampionnen, roze, een bijzonder persoon die mooie dingen maakt, stof, een nieuwe vriend?, een vrolijke kleine geit en de wat nieuwsgierige kippen. Zie hier!

VILLAGE
Here is an image for one of the upcoming Nadia stories. It takes place in a little village near La Paz. A village surrounded by palm trees, dirt roads, animals and people in the streets (in the dirt road, that is).

Warm, sun, cosy, drinking lemonade, green, wood, palm trees, laundry drying, earthly tones, sand, ice-cream, Chinese lanterns, pink, a remarkable person who makes beautiful things, dust, a new friend?, a merry little goat and some curious chickens. Picture this!

STYLE

Ik kijk veel films (serieus, veel films). En soms, als ik een film voor de derde keer zie, zit ik op de bank mee te tekenen. Dan maak ik kleine schetsjes van de omgeving, huizen en figuren uit de film. Die kan ik dan later eens in een illustratie gebruiken. Tegelijkertijd maak ik ook kleine tekeningetjes van alle outfits die (meestal) de hoofdrolspeelster draagt.
Dus, ik heb er paar samengesteld voor het geval je misschien toe bent aan een nieuwe garderobe!

I watch a lot (seriously, a lot) of movies. And sometimes, when I watch a movie for maybe the third time, I sit on my couch and draw along with it. Most of the time I make little sketches of nice settings, houses and figures. To put to use, in an illustration, later on. But I also make little drawings from all the outfits the (most of the time) main character is wearing during the movie.

So, I put some together, just in case you need a whole new wardrobe!

LIFE

Hij kwam uit een doos.
Samen met een zelfgemaakte houten boot, een pluche aapje (met een beetje typisch verleden) en een ingelijst schilderen-op-nummer potret van een hond.

30 jaar geleden (voor 'de doos') had hij een naam en een verjaardag.
Alles stond opgeschreven in een blauw notitieboekje.
Dat (natuurlijk!) niet uit de doos kwam.


He came out of a box.
Along with a selfmade monkey (who's pas is somewhat pickled) and a framed paint-by-numbers picture of a dog.

30 years ago (before 'the box') he had a name and a birthday.
All written down in a little blue notebook.
Which (off course!) was not in the box.
